The Flag of the District of Columbia:
With a design derived from the family coat of arms of George Washington, the flag illustrates the connection between the first president's influence in establishing the nation's capital that bears his name. As early as 1792, the "Plan of the City of Washington in the Territory of Columbia..." bore the Washington crest.
The flag was commissioned by Melvin C. Hazen, President, Board of Commissions, approved by the Board of Commissions on June 16, 1938, approved by the Congress, and signed by President Roosevelt on October 15, 1938.
